Background: This website acts as the basis for information technology product company SoftBank Commerce & Service (SB C&S)’s recruitment activities. Being a top company in Japan for distributing IT products, SB C&S plays a leading role in innovation and wants to attract more talented people into its fold. With the knowledge that the business field extends beyond the desk and outside the office, the strength to always aim to be the top company, and the overwhelming speed and mobility to make it happen, SB C&S seeks individuals that share these values, and the role of this website is to convey these and foster feelings of pride and a desire to work at the company.

Design core: The key visuals are power and speed. We pondered on how to convey these two sometimes-contradictory elements at the same time. To solve the problem, we made each graphic heavier and heavier but kept them moving at a fast tempo. The graphics are in a high-contrast monotone, and the site uses the angular font Chakra Petch. The entire site only uses three colors—black, white and silver.

Challenges: The photography proved difficult. We had to proceed with the production of the site before giving a lot of time to consider photography, and later there were further time restrictions we encountered during the design work. We worked hard to make tone samples for the client to approve.

Divergent paths: If we could start over, we would spend more time on the photography!

Navigation structure: The site is designed to get potential employees to the page they want to see depending on their interest. Upon first accessing the site, visitors can search for the content that resonates with them emotionally and prepare for application. A call-to-action button quickly directs visitors to a form, letting them follow up on their decision to join the company.

Technology: The software we used was PhpStorm. For the back end, we used WordPress and PHP. The front end is WebGL and JavaScript, the latter also provides the key visuals on the landing page.
