Based in Linz, Austria, Daniel Spatzek works as a freelance designer and art director with brands like throat lozenge brand Fisherman’s Friend and Mentos. Knowing the limited scope of a portfolio site, Spatzek decided to make his online platform playful and memorable. Four short animations on the home page reveal different facets of Spatzek’s personality, from the personal (a night owl) to the professional—a judge for the CSS Design Awards. A unique navigation system moves in all four directions using extensive transitional animations to bring visitors to different subpages; these subpages feature distinct design elements and animations, including huge, autoscrolling text on the About page; hover and scroll effects that slice pictures apart on the Newsblog page; glitch, slice and single-letter animations on the Project page, as well as providing a horizontal navigation bar for visitors to view each of Spatzek’s projects without interruption; and 3-D effects on the Contact page—with a special Easter egg for those who are curious to know how much Spatzek charges for a website.

For his site, Spatzek designed it in Photoshop and wrote it in Visual Studio Code; the site uses CSS3, GreenSock, HTML5, jQuery and PixiJS, and the backend was built in the PHP-based CMS SilverStripe.
