Digital publication Maine Thing Quarterly presents immersive online experiences that give visitors a taste of what the state has to offer. The Chasing the Sun issue, created by design agency BVK and sponsored by apparel company L.L. Bean, follows six explorers as they tackle spontaneous outdoor adventures head-on in a single weekend spent in Maine. With BVK’s production partners Trademark-R assisting with videography and photographer Erin Little providing still shots, the site elegantly displays the entire weekend through a meandering scrolling animation, leading the eye through the different parts of the adventure. Earth tones and the sun inspired the site’s color palette, enhancing the issue’s natural themes. The site whets the appetite for a vacation to Maine; in fact, for the more adventurous visitor, you can write down the GPS coordinates BVK provided for the different places in the Chasing the Sun adventure and travel to these places yourself. “In order to provide a sense of place and context around the location and time, we integrated latitude and longitude coordinates as well as time stamps for whatever part of the story was in view,” says BVK’s group creative director Kevin Kriehn. “We used a bold condensed font for the GPS and technical items, which conveys a compass-like vibe.” These immersive elements hammer in the idea that an adventure in Maine is within everyone’s grasp.
