Unpublished photograph for People Weekly. "Mukhtar Mai Bibi was gang raped in 2002 by men from her village on the orders of a tribal council. The rape was imposed as punishment for an alleged affair her brother had with a woman from the same village. The rape sparked outrage in Pakistan and across the world, yet the men who were at first convicted of raping Ms. Mai were later acquitted on appeal. The case is now pending before Pakistan's Supreme Court. Ms. Mai, meanwhile, used the initial compensation money she received from the government to open a school in Meerwala, the village where she lives, and has become a symbol for womens' rights in Pakistan."
