"SummerJam: Designing innovation. Led by IBMer Melinda McMullen, this program's stated purpose was to help IBM's 800 summer-hire PhD interns see the benefits of accepting a job at IBM. It teamed these graduate students with 300 of IBM's best researchers in six labs around the world to spend a whole day exploring the future of e-business in the year 2020. The surprising result was that veteran researchers as much as the interns came away from the experience with a deeper connection to IBM and its potential to do valuable work in the world. SY[P] designed every element of the experience—from the simulations the teams conducted (including a three-hour innovation simulation), to exercises, to dialog sessions, to the materials. The jam-session format is something that continues to this day at IBM as a method of inspiring inventing thinking about provocative subjects."
